If surgery is something you want to leave as a last resort, there are effective topical products you can use. Most, regardless of the brand name, are simply variations of the drug Minoxidil. One of the more well known brand names of this generic drug is Rogaine. Topical products such as Rogaine are rubbed into the scalp and allowed to sit for a specific amount of time in order to achieve hair regrowth.

Although it is very effective, it can also cause skin irritation because of the alcohol base that the product uses. This can often be aggravated by the long amount of time that the product has to sit on the skin itself. And you may find that you need to keep paying for these pricey products because once you stop using them, your hair loss will resume and any new hair will fall out again.

If you want a permanent way to deal with hair loss, your only option is surgery. There are several types of surgery including transplanting skin, implanting hair plugs or even hair flap surgery as well. Hair transplants and hair plugs are less invasive because small strips of skin or sections of hair are being moved and implanted. Hair flap surgery is often more radical because an entire flap of skin is being stretched and resewn into place. Hairless skin is removed and the hair flap is sewn into place and acts as a new scalp and hair supply all in one.

Each of these procedures has its own risks and potential side effects. Each needs to be performed by a qualified professional. Risks can include reactions to anaesthetics or other medications used in the procedure. They can also include infection or, in some cases, a failure for the plugs or transplant to take hold. There may also be scarring in some cases.
